Nike is a sportswear company that has been around for over thirty years. It's a company that I have always loved and admired for their innovative ideas to create products with comfort and performance in mind. But one thing Nike has never been known for, until now, is authenticating product serial numbers. This practice has been standard practice for many other sports brands, but Nike has always stayed outside of this industry. This changes because of the recent scandal with counterfeit sneakers in China — workers at factories in these factories were taking apart shoes and then stitching new serial numbers into them before sending them back to the U.S.. I have always purchased my Nikes at authorized retail shops to avoid this type of fraud, but it seems I was not the only one to have purchased shoes this way. Nike has recently announced an initiative to authenticate product serial numbers by placing a pattern on the back of each shoe. What does that mean for me? Well, if you are an avid sneaker collector or just want to be assured that your product is authentic, then this is great news. Serial numbers are now being centered at the back of your shoe on both its sole and upper side. Nike has created a pattern (see picture) to help distinguish normal wear patterns from counterfeiting frauds.
